Lutsen 99er Bike Race faces changes due to weather
The Lutsen 99er Bike Race trail has been affected by the recent rainstorms around the Northland, making multiple areas of the course impassable. Because of the trail damage, those who were registered for the 99-mile course will now be participating in the 69-mile course.
The parts of the course that were most impacted by storms were the Timber Fear Loop, which is blocked by downed trees; and Wringer Road, which has been waterlogged and is too wet to ride through.
“So, this is not the first time this event has had rain and mud, that’s part of mountain biking and off-road adventure, just sometimes the weather can make the adventure extra emphasized, like this weekend. The courses will still have the same mix of what everyone loves about them,” said Amanda Kussin, the Lutsen Race Marketing Manager. “We’ll still have ATV and snowmobile trails, the single track, all the beautiful canopy covered roads. Our 99er course did get hit the hardest with trees that are down and some areas that are so muddy, they’re impassable.”
There will be two 69 miler races due to the influx in participants. The 45-mile and 29-mile events will continue as planned.
“This event is truly just a celebration of summer and mountain biking. Everyone is welcome. Whether you’re new to the trails or you’re an experienced mountain biker. The community is super involved. We have everyone bringing up their whole families, their whole friend groups, spectators coming out to watch the event, a weekend full of festivities besides the races. So, it’s just a celebration, kicking back, camaraderie and adventure,” said Kussin.
The event weekend will begin Friday June 28th at 3:00pm with event festivities. The Little Niners race will begin at 5:30pm.
On Saturday June 29th the races will begin with the 99ers who will begin their now 69-mile journey at 7:30am.
