Mercury Bischoff becomes first Northlander since 2003 to be named Ms. Hockey

On Sunday, Grand Rapids/Greenway’s Mercury Bischoff became the first Northlander since 2003 to be crowned Ms. Hockey.

“As it started narrowing down to the five, I was like OK, it’s probably just going to be some of these girls. And yeah, I thought it was for sure a possibility, but I didn’t want to get my hopes up just in case if nothing happened. But it’s always exciting to think, oh, this can happen,” Bischoff said.

This season, the senior scored 58 goals for the Lightning, adding 28 assists for a total of 86 points on the season. Bischoff also lead the entire state in goals and points.

She eclipsed the 30 goal mark in each of the past five seasons, scoring 40 or more three times and completely breaking through this year, tallying a career high with 58. Bischoff finishes her career with 381 points, which ranks 12th all time in state history.

“The senior year has been like super like fun,” Bischoff added. “We haven’t had too much drama, which is super nice considering we’re all girls. So that was super fun, and we were a good team. So it was super fun to have like a great senior year with a great group of girls. And I couldn’t ask for like a better group of girls to have your senior year with.”

Andrea Nichols was the last Northland girl to win the award, taking it home in 2003 for Hibbing/Chisholm.

Bischoff saw her high school career end in the Section 7AA title game, falling 7-3 to Andover, but will continue to play hockey in the state of Minnesota, as she heads to Minnesota State Mankato to play collegiate hockey.
