Midnight Rule inspired UMD goalie Knapp to bounce back in series split with Colorado College

Midnight Rule inspired UMD goalie Knapp to bounce back in series split with Colorado College

Bulldogs are a resilient pack. The University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) men’s hockey team may have had a tough go of it to start their season, but they’ve won three of their last four games over ranked teams.

Last weekend they fell 7-2 to Colorado College on Friday, but rebounded Saturday to win 4-1. The series was a difference of nine saves and four goals allowed in game one, to 27 saves and one goal allowed in game two, for UMD freshman goalie Klayton Knapp.

“I kind of developed a midnight rule for myself through juniors that, if I win, I feel really good about myself. Midnight hits, okay, got another game the next night and now we’ve got to reset to repeat that performance,” Knapp explained. “Obviously Friday night, I wasn’t good enough. Bottom line, I wasn’t good enough. And so, again, that midnight rule hit. And, I knew Saturday was going to be a different story.

UMD earned the series split over the then-18th ranked Tigers. The Bulldogs improve to 9-12-1 overall and 5-7 in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC).

The Bulldogs are next tasked with hosting No. 5 University of Denver (17-5) this weekend at AMSOIL Arena. Puck drop Friday is set for 7:07 p.m., with their series finale Saturday at 6:07 p.m.
