Minnesota native Matt Wilkinson qualifies for US Olympic track team

A Minnesota man earned a qualifying spot on Team USA Sunday.

A Greenwood, Minnesota native, former Carleton College and Gopher standout, Matt Wilkinson placed second in the 3,000 meter steeplechase in the Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon.

His time of 8 minutes 23 seconds was enough to land him a qualifying spot on the Team USA track team. He needed to finish in the top three.

However, he has not officially earned a ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics since his time didn’t beat the qualifying standard of 8:15. Wilkinson could still make it to Paris based off his World Athletics’ world rankings. The full U.S. Olympic track and field delegation is scheduled to be set July 7.
