No. 6 UMD women's hockey battle tested ahead of series with No. 1 Wisconsin

If the No. 6 University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) women’s hockey team wants to make a late season statement, the time is now. This weekend they’re set to host the number one ranked team in the country in 25-1-2 Wisconsin.

Not only are the Bulldogs tasked with toppling the once-beaten Badgers, they also need to shake off their own four game losing skid.

“The narrative that we’re putting out, and that we’re fully believing in right now, is just this is our path, this is our journey. It doesn’t matter really what’s in the past, it’s not going to be perfect. It’s our path, it’s our path to the national championship. So, just focusing on moving forward and accepting the past, and loving every step of our journey even though sometimes we have step downs,” Clara Van Wieren said, a graduate student captain.

UMD suffered back-to-back losses at St. Thomas last weekend, falling 3-2 then 4-3 in overtime. That came after Ohio State swept the Bulldogs in Duluth the week prior.

Game one between No. 6 UMD and No. 1 Wisconsin is Friday, January 31 at 6 p.m. at AMSOIL Arena, with their series finale Saturday, February 1 at 3 p.m. The last time the two programs met was in October, when the Badgers won 5-1 and 7-3 in Madison.
