Northland runners punch tickets to state in section cross country championships
On Thursday the Northland hosted two section cross country championships.
The Section 7A championship meet took place at Coleraine’s Eagle Ridge Golf Course, and the Section 7AA championship took place at the Hibbing Municipal Golf Course.
The top two teams and next six individuals advance to state.
In Section 7A the South Ridge/North Woods co-op and Carlton/Wrenshall girls, and South Ridge/North Woods and Greenway/Nashwauk-Keewatin boys qualified as teams.
Carlton/Wrenshall’s Jack Riley won the boy’s 5k with a time of 16 minutes 32 seconds. Ely’s Molly Brophy won the girls race with a time of 19:12.
In Section 7AA Hibbing and Proctor girls, and Chisago Lakes and Mora boys won as teams.
Rock Ridge’s Jack Kendall was the top Northland boy finisher coming in third with a time of 17:10.6. Proctor’s Lizzy Harnell was the top Northland girl, finishing second in 19 minutes 23 seconds.
The Section 7AAA meet was held in Anoka. As teams the Duluth East girls claimed first, and the boys took second to both qualify for state.
Ben Westholm was the Greyhounds’ top boy finisher taking third with a time of 16:13.27. Rowan Bixler was the Greyhounds’ top girl finishing second with a time of 18:28.09.
State is Saturday, November 4 at the University of Minnesota’s Les Bolstad Golf Course. The girls run at Noon at the boys race at 1 p.m..
