Pionk scores in overtime leading UMD men’s hockey to victory over No. 10 Arizona State
Aaron Pionk scored the game-winning goal in overtime Friday night at AMSOIL Arena lifting the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) men’s hockey team to a 3-2 victory over No. 10 Arizona State University (ASU).
The Bulldogs came out firing, with Dominic James scoring the game’s first goal late in the first period on a UMD power play. ASU’s Artem Shlaine tied the game less than a minute later on a Sun Devils power play.
The second period started with a Lukas Sillinger goal to put ASU in the lead 2-1. UMD went on another power play, and Callum Arnott capitalized tying the game 2-2. The third went scoreless, forcing overtime. At the 2:37 mark of OT Aaron Pionk scored handing UMD the 3-2 upset win.
In net, UMD’s Klayton Knapp made 23 saves, while ASU’s Luke Pavicich also tallied 23 saves.
The Bulldogs improve to 11-15-1 overall, and 7-10 in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC). Their series finale with No. 10 ASU (17-11-1) is Saturday at 6:07 p.m. back at AMSOIL Arena.
