Prep hockey: Hermantown boys stage third period comeback, Rock Ridge girls down CEC

On Tuesday night. Hermantown boys hockey survived a scare in Superior, winning 3-1 with all three goals in the third period, while Rock Ridge girls hockey put up six goals in a 6-3 win over Cloquet/Esko/Carlton.

In Superior, the Spartans got on the board first, as Tyler Olson bat the puck into the back of the net. The score would hold through two periods, with both teams missing scoring chances by narrow margins.

In the third period though, Hermantown flipped the switch, as Mick Martalock scored to tie the game at 1-1 and Ford Skytta scored the go-ahead and game clinching goals for the Hawks.

Hermantown turns to take on St. Thomas Academy on Friday at 6 p.m., while Superior will try to bounce back against Proctor on Thursday at 7 p.m.

In Cloquet, neither team had a problem putting up goals, with five combined first period goals. Each first period alternated between teams, as CEC’s  Jordan Linder struck first, but Gabby Hutar fired back to make it 1-1. Mimi Babiracki was Rock Ridge’s only other first period goal, and the Lumberjacks took a 3-2 lead into intermission thanks to Brayley Merrier and Addy Johnson.

Afterwards, however, it was all Rock Ridge. Natalie Bergman and Ayla Troutwine scored in the second period to make it a 4-2 game, and in the third, Mayme Scott and Troutwine found the back of the net to seal the deal.

Rock Ridge turns to take on the Duluth Northern Stars on Friday at 7:30 p.m., while CEC looks to get back on track against North Shore on Monday at 7 p.m.
