Prep Soccer: Cloquet/Carlton tops Esko, Duluth Marshall girls & Denfeld boys earn home wins
In prep soccer on Tuesday, the Cloquet/Carlton girls took down Esko, while the Duluth Marshall girls and Duluth Denfeld boys also tallied home wins.
In Cloquet, the Cloquet/Carlton girls shut out Esko 1-0. It was a battle between two reigning section champions, with the Lumberjacks the defending Section 7AA champs and Esko the defending Section 7A champs. Lauren Hughes scored the sole goal for the Lumberjacks, with Adeline Randall earning the assist. Allison Hammond made seven saves in net for Cloquet/Carlton. Cloquet/Carlton (2-1) next hosts Alexandria Thursday, while Esko (2-1) visits Hibbing next Tuesday, Sept. 3.
At Duluth Marshall, the Hilltopper girls came back to defeat Hermantown 3-2. The Hawks’ Bryden Giesen scored the first goal of the game halfway through the first. Duluth Marshall (2-1) next battles Denfeld Saturday, Sept. 7, while Hermantown (0-2) visits Proctor Thursday.
At Duluth Denfeld, the Hunter boys shut out North Branch 3-0 to win their home opener. Ben Senich scored first in the first half, with Tyler Northfield netting his first two career goals in the second half. Keeper Cannon Peak recorded his first career shutout with five saves. Denfeld (1-2) next hosts Lakeville South on Thursday.
