Prep Soccer: Late pushes end in conference ties at Superior and Cloquet-Carlton
There were no winners or losers in Thursday’s prep soccer Lake Superior Conference matchups at Superior and Cloquet-Carlton.
In the final week of regular season play, Duluth Marshall girls soccer took on Cloquet-Carlton in a Lake Superior Conference competition. Marshall, coming in with a 5-2-3 record, looked to dethrone then-11-1 Cloquet-Carlton, who have only given up 2 points all season.
In the first half, the Hilltoppers find their way into the Lumberjack’s net with Aubrey Johnson barreling in and passing it to Nina Thorson who shoots the ball to put Marshall on the board. The Lumberjacks come back fired up in the second half, senior Makena Smith takes advantage of a penalty kick to put Cloquet on the board. Hilltoppers’ goalie Addi Bastien doesn’t let up easy, managing to snag the ball away from an army of attackers.
The battle concludes in a draw at 1-1.
Duluth Marshall girls’ soccer will return to their home turf Saturday September 28th to battle Visitation at 11AM. Cloquet-Carlton girls’ soccer will return to the road Saturday September 28th to battle Hermantown at 11AM.
Hermantown boys on a six-game unbeaten streak, visited Superior who had only fallen once in home game matchups.
In the second half, Gavin Simonson set up a cross shot that hit the keeper but rolled back and in to tie the game. Later Hermantown gets a free kick. Hunter Nelson curved it to Gabriel Wiita, but his header is pulled in by Paolo Pagnucco. Now in the 72nd minute, Nelson beats the keeper for the Hawks to take the 2-1 lead.
This battle also ended in a draw at 2-2.
Hermantown boys’ soccer will return to their home turf Saturday September 28th to battle Cloquet-Esko-Carlton at 1PM. Superior next visits Proctor Monday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m.
