Proctor/Hermantown ties it late, falls in OT to Warroad in State quarterfinals
On Wednesday, the fifth seeded Proctor/Hermantown girls hockey team fell to fourth seeded, defending back-to-back state champs, Warroad 2-1 in overtime in the Class A state quarterfinals at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. The Mirage and Warriors drew the 8 p.m. puck drop, the final game of the day.
This marked a rematch of the 2021-2022 state title game, where Warroad won 6-1. In the 2020-2021 tournament the Mirage beat Warroad in the semifinals 3-1, en route to state championship victory.
Warroad opened the scoring in the first period with a goal from Sophie Johnson with 6:11 to go in the frame. The first ended 1-0 in favor of the Warriors. The second period would be scoreless.
In the third period, with 40 seconds left in the game, Mirage eighth grader Taylee Manion tied it to force overtime. However, at the 4:01 mark of OT Taylor Reese scored the game-winning goal for Warroad to win 2-1.
Mirage goalie Neelah McLeod made 30 saves, while the Warriors’ Payton Rolli made 26 saves.
Proctor/Hermantown (18-9-2) moves to the Consolation semifinals. They will face off against Luverne Thursday at 2 p.m. at TRIA Rink.
Warroad advances to the semifinals where they’ll face the top-seeded Academy of Holy Angels Friday at 1 p.m. back at the Xcel Energy Center.
