The Rock Ridge Wolverines boy’s tennis team has punched their ticket to the Minnesota state tournament for the fourth year in a row with their 5-2 win against Hibbing on May 16.

The team was formed four years ago from two high-performing teams, the Virginia Blue Devils and the Eveleth-Gilbert Golden Bears. The Wolverines have not only held their own in section 7A but have defied expectations and dominated their opponents.

Tyler Callister, senior team captain, explained that this year has been no different.

“It’s our goal from the start of the season to make it to the state tournament, so we come in everyday for practice ready to work towards that goal. So, it feels good to see all that progress kind of unfold and prove that we are a good team,” said Callister.

After graduating two notable players in the 2023 season, Callister said the odds weren’t looking strong for the team on paper, but each player came to practice ready to better themselves.

The Wolverines are set to depart for the state tournament on Monday and will take on Cotter, MN at the Reed-Sweatt Tennis Center on Tuesday. For tournament updates, you can check www.mshsl.com or Rock Ridge on Facebook.
