Rock Ridge hires Matt Niskanen as next boys hockey coach
NHL legend Matt Niskanen is headed back home.
The Virginia native is slated to take over the Rock Ridge boys hockey program, thanks to a 5-1 schoolboard vote Monday night.
“Nisky” played 13 seasons in the NHL and won the Stanley cup with the Washington capitals in 2018.
Graduating from Mountain Iron-Buhl high school, Nisky skated for the Virginia/MIB boys’ hockey team and helped the Blue Devils reach their first-ever state high school tournament appearance.
Niskanen takes over for Ben Johnson, who was recently hired as an assistant coach for the Minnesota Wilderness.
