Section 7A boys hockey: CEC, Hermantown, Proctor, Hibbing/Chisholm win quarterfinals
In the Section 7A boys hockey quarterfinals Tuesday, No. 1 Cloquet-Esko-Carlton, No. 2 Hermantown, No. 3 Hibbing/Chisholm, and No. 4 Proctor earned wins to advance to the semifinals.

No. 1 Cloquet-Esko-Carlton shut out No. 8 Moose Lake Area 9-0 at Northwoods Credit Union Arena. The Lumberjacks scored three goals in each period. Bobby Thornton and Luca Gentilini each scored two goals, while Jordan Sewell had one goal and two assists, and Cole Painovich recorded three assists. In net, the Rebels’ Eli Gilbertson made 51 saves while CEC’s Jacob Iallonardo made eight. Moose Lake Area ends their season 13-12, while the Lumberjacks improve to 19-7.
Their semifinal foe will be No. 4 Proctor, who held off No. 5 International Falls 4-3 in overtime at the St. Luke’s Sports & Events Center. The Rails led 1-0 after the first thanks to Austin Bryant. The Broncos scored first in the second from Kaden Korpi, but Proctor’s Breckin Ross (power play) and Tanner Ross made it 3-1 after two. In the third William Yerxa scored on the power play for International Falls, then Korpi scored his second to tie the game 3-3. This forced overtime, where Cooper Annala scored the game-winner for the Rails just 36 seconds in. In net, Kane Thompson made 30 saves while Proctor’s Brayden Mclean made 14. Proctor improves to 14-11-1, while the Broncos end their season 17-9.
No. 4 Proctor and No. 1 CEC will faceoff in the Section 7A semifinals Saturday, February 22 at 6 p.m. at AMSOIL Arena. The second semifinal will be between No. 2 Hermantown and No. 3 Hibbing/Chisholm at 8 p.m.
No. 2 Hermantown rolled past No. 7 Greenway 16-0 at the Hermantown Hockey Arena in their quarterfinal. The Hawks led just 2-0 after the first, but scored nine goals in the second, and added five more in the third. Beau Christy and River Freeman scored hat-tricks. Christy tallied five points off three goals and two assists, while Kole Lendzyk had five points off one goal and four assists. In net, Greenway’s Blayne Kelly led their trio making 31 stops, to Bryce Francisco’s four. Hermantown now sits 14-8-4, while the Raiders end their season 8-17-1.
Their next foe No. 3 Hibbing/Chisholm toppled No. 6 North Shore 11-0 at the Hibbing Memorial Arena. The Bluejackets scored four in the first, six in the second, and were held to one in the third. Cole Swanson had three goals and one assist, while Tate Swanson had two goals and three assists. In net, Dax Krech made 55 saves for the Storm, while Rex Walli made 11 for Hibbing/Chisholm. The Bluejackets improve to 17-9, while North Shore ends their season 10-16.
