Section 7A Boys Hockey Quarterfinals: Hermantown, Proctor, CEC & Hibbing/Chisholm advance
In the Section 7A boys hockey quarterfinals on Tuesday, Hermantown, Proctor, Cloquet-Esko-Carlton, and Hibbing/Chisholm earned wins to advance.
Top-seeded Hermantown shut out No. 8 International Falls 14-0. The Hawks had 11 different scorers, and were led by River Freeman with two goals and four assists and AJ Francisco with one goal and three assists. Despite the loss, the Broncos’ netminder Kane Thompson still made 51 saves. They finish their season 6-19-2.
No. 4 Proctor defeated No. 5 North Shore 5-1. Wyatt Mineheine scored a hat-trick for the Rails, while Breckin Ross and Tanner Ross each scored one goal. Ethan Meeks scored the Storm’s sole goal in the third period. North Shore netminder Zach Bentler made 47 saves, while AJ Reyelts recorded 31. They finish their season 12-11-3.
Proctor (19-7) advances to face four-time defending Section 7A champions Hermantown (16-8-2) in the semifinals Saturday, February 24. Puck drop is set for 6 p.m. at AMSOIL Arena.
No. 2 Cloquet-Esko-Carlton shut out Ely 12-0. Eight different Lumberjacks scored, with Bobby Thornton leading the pack registering a hat-trick plus two assists. Ely goalie Ben Leeson made 59 saves. They finish their season 14-12.
No. 3 Hibbing/Chisholm held off No. 6 Greenway 4-1. Isaiah Hildenbrand tallied two goals and an assists for the Bluejackets, while Jackson Strukel and Blaydon Kubena-McCue added a goal each. Dylan Villeneuve scored the Raiders sole goal in the second period. Greenway’s goalie Derek Gibeau made 45 saves. They finish their season 5-18-3.
Hibbing/Chisholm (18-8) advances to face Cloquet-Esko-Carlton (13-13) in the semifinals Saturday at 8 p.m. at AMSOIL Arena.
