Strong defensive play lifts Minnesota Wilderness over Anchorage
A night of great goaltending and plenty of power play kills were contributors in the Minnesota Wilderness’ 3-2 win over the Anchorage Wolverines on Friday night in Cloquet.
In the first period, a shot from Peteris Purmalis deflected off Logan Nagle and found the back of the net, giving the Wilderness the 1-0 lead.
Later, Daniel Astapovich would score just seconds into the second period, increasing the lead to 2-0. Finally, Aiden Shirey scored, giving the Wilderness their third and final goal of the game.
Minnesota goaltender Nick Erickson made 40 saves to Anchorage netminder Liam Beerman’s 16.
The Wilderness are back on the ice Saturday against the Wolverines, looking for the weekend sweep. Puck drop is 7:15 p.m. at Cloquet’s Northwoods Credit Union Arena.
