Superior football ready to right the ship with new energy
The first day of Wisconsin high school practices was Tuesday, and the Superior Spartans are looking to turn around last years 0-9 record, because in a way, it may has served as a good thing, according to the team.
“We went through an 0-9 season,” said Garet Rivord, a senior lineman. “So I mean, we’re all together, we treat each other like family now. So it’s just, you go through all that and now you’re just together and it sticks you together. No one wants to quit, no one wants to leave here 0-9 next year, we just want to make it the best we can.”
“Everybody was so hungry, especially after the season, it’s like, we ended on a game that was super close and could have gone either way. So that loss, nobody wants that feeling again. So everybody’s worked so hard and everybody’s ready,” added Tanner Leno, a senior quarterback.
Along with the newfound confidence comes a new coach, Rob Scott, coming back to his roots and taking over the reigns in Superior.
“Growth is very hard to measure,” said Scott. “You can say what you want about the record and stuff, but this team, I watched them from afar and was still very connected to this program for a lot of reasons. They did grow a lot and had some tough breaks, but it’s not an 0-9 team in my book. There was a lot of growth, a lot of hardship on the scoreboard that took place, but we’re gonna parlay that forward and keep this thing moving forward.”
From 2006-2021, Scott was a Superior teacher and a Spartan football coach.
Scott was the assistant head coach under Bob DeMeyer and defensive coordinator in his final eight seasons with the program.
After his departure in 2021, Scott went over to Eau Claire Memorial where he was the head coach.
