Thompson hits buzzer beater lifting UMD men’s basketball into 2nd round of NCAA tournament
On Saturday, Mattie Thompson hit a last second layup lifting the No. 10 University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) men’s basketball team past Fort Hays State University 59-58 in round one of the NCAA DII Central Regional tournament in Mankato.
UMD was trailing 58-57 with seven seconds left in the game, when Drew Blair found Duluth native Mattie Thompson who laid in two of the glass in the final second to win 59-58.
The Bulldogs held the 31-27 lead at halftime, but were outshot 31-28 in the second half. Drew Blair led UMD with 13 points and 5 rebounds, while Charlie Katona had 13 points and four rebounds, and Austin Andrews added 10 points and eight rebounds.
Fort Hays State’s Elijah Nnanabu led the game with 19 points and six rebounds.
UMD advances to the NCAA Regional semifinals Sunday against fourth ranked Northwest Missouri State. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. in Mankato. For the full bracket, click here.
