UMD football leaning on defense ahead of homecoming matchup

Just one week after UMD football gave up 400 total yards of offense, they not only bounced back with a win against the University of Mary, but held the Marauders to just 92 yards of total offense. The key for them is actually quite simple.

“It was fun to watch our defense play football,” said Head Coach Curt Wiese. “I think we’ve tackled well all fall, maybe as good as we’ve had since I’ve been here, which has been a really good thing and a positive. Those are things that we’re going to continue to lean on as a defense and as a team and take a lot of pride in being a good tackling defense and sound defensively. We need to continue to create turnovers. We did that at Mary and that helped win the game for us.”

“Just kind of doing your job,” said fifth-year linebacker Andrew Klopp, who is currently leading the NSIC in tackles. “I mean, everyone has a certain job and don’t do too much. Don’t do too little, but just play as hard as you can and things will happen.”

The Bulldogs turn to take on Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday, who they shut out in last year’s meeting.
