UMD men’s hockey soaring behind Knapp, next off to Omaha

UMD men's hockey soaring behind Knapp, next off to Omaha

The University of Minnesota Duluth men’s hockey team has found themselves with wins against top teams, including the University of Denver on January 24th.

“It helps when you get good goaltending. Obviously, Knappers (Klayton Knapp) played really well for us, so that’s helped. I think we were pretty good against Denver. I thought they were a dangerous team off the rush, which I thought they got a lot of their opportunities off of, but I thought in the zone, even the night they had 45 shots, it didn’t feel like sometimes when we played them,” said UMD men’s hockey head coach Scott Sandelin.

Knapp tallied 42 saves in their 4-3 win over the Denver Pioneers, and 28 saves in their 2-1 loss. Since their series against Denver, the Bulldogs had one week off and will now look to continue their hot streak against the University of Nebraska in Omaha.

“They’re a big heavy team. That’s just how they’ve been. That’s how they formed a team around. They are going to be out there. They’re going to be ready to go in the first five minutes to hit and play defensively sound. So that’s one thing that I’ve learned last year playing them. It’s a tough challenge, but I think that we kind of have that same mindset. We also have that offensive mindset to put the puck in the back of that as well,” said UMD sophomore defenseman Aaron Pionk.

The 10-3-1 Bulldogs will face off against the 14-11-1 University of Nebraska in Omaha on Friday, February 8th at 7PM, and their series will conclude on Saturday, February 9th at 7PM. Click here to view the Bulldog’s full season schedule.
