The University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) men’s hockey team is coming off a massive weekend, sweeping then-10th ranked St. Cloud State University with a 2-0 then 5-2 win. One of the biggest moments came late in game two when Hermantown native Joey Pierce scored his first collegiate goal, to make it 5-2, 83 games into his UMD career.

“Really happy for Joe. Coming out of the penalty box, we were kind of laughing if it was a forward goal or a defenseman’s goal. So he said it was a forwards goal,” Adam Krause recalled, UMD’s Associated Head Coach. “The reaction on the bench, I don’t know if you guys saw it, but speaks volumes about how our guys feel about Joe. And I think really surprised, actually, that’s his first goal with how much impact he has on the game.”

UMD now sits 8-11-1 as they prep for a long road trip to Colorado College (10-9-1). The Bulldogs have momentum, but the Tigers will be hungry to snap a now four game skid.

Their series opener in Colorado Springs is Friday with a 9pm Central Time puck drop. They close it out Saturday at 7pm at Ed Robson Arena.
