UMD men’s hockey skates to tie with Alaska-Fairbanks despite Knapp’s 34 saves
Klayton Knapp was exceptional in net for the UMD men’s hockey team on Friday night with 34 saves, however, the Bulldogs skate to a 2-2 tie with the Alaska Fairbanks Nanooks.
The Bulldogs were off to a quick start, as Carter Loney scored just nine minutes into game action, a top shelf goal to take the 1-0 lead. The Nanooks struck back two minutes into the second period with a goal of their own, knotting the game at 1-1.
Later in the period, Aaron Pionk found the back of the net, giving the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead, which they would maintain until the third period, when Fairbanks scored again.
Neither team would score the rest of the third period or in overtime, resulting in a penalty shootout which didn’t count for either team. Anthony Menghini was the goal scorer for UMD, while Klayton Knapp registered five saves in the penalty shootout, adding to his total for the night.
UMD and Fairbanks meet again on the ice on Saturday, with puck drop set for 6:07 p.m.
