UMD men’s hockey ties with No. 11 Colorado College, wins in the shootout
On Friday the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) men’s hockey team opened their final regular season road series visiting No. 11 Colorado College. They would skate to a 2-2 tie after overtime, and the Bulldogs would win in the shootout to earn the extra National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) points.
After a scoreless first period, Anthony Menghini put UMD on the board first scoring in the first two minutes of the second period. The Tigers then scored twice to lead 2-1 after the second. Five minutes into the third Connor McMenamin scored to tie the game for the Bulldogs, and eventually force overtime.
Overtime ended with the game still tied 2-2, forcing a shootout. UMD would go 2-1 in the shootout to win the extra NCHC points. In net for UMD Matthew Thiessen would make 18 saves, plus two stops in the shootout.
UMD and Colorado College have now gone into overtime in all three of their meetings this season. In January UMD won 3-2 in OT, then lost 3-2 in OT in Duluth to split their series.
The Bulldogs will fight for the road sweep in their finale with the Tigers Saturday at 7 p.m. in Colorado Springs.
