UMD softball comes up short in first home doubleheader against Winona State
On Friday, University of Minnesota Duluth softball opened its home season against their first NSIC foe Winona State University, falling 8-6 and 13-2 in the doubleheader matchup.
In game one: Winona would start the scoring off in the first inning, then tallying three more in the second inning. UMD would put themselves on the board with a home run from Nicole Schmitt, followed by another home run by Kendal Jenkins. In the sixth inning, Jenkins would rack in another home run, bringing herself and Schmitt in to tie things at fives. Sierra Thomas would rip a single to center field, driving Billi Connell home. Winona State would go on to score three more points, winning 8-6.
In game two: Winona State would start the scoring off early in the first inning, scoring eight runs, including a two-run homer. In the second inning, the Bulldogs would put themselves on the board with a home run from Kendal Jenkins. The next point would go to the Warriors in the fourth inning. UMD would tally their second point of the game thanks to a shot from Nicole Schmitt that gave Morgan McMillan room to make it home. Winona would then go on to tally four more points, ending the game with a 13-2 win in six innings.
