All aboard the Bulldogs’ bus, destination: Dallas.
Early Wednesday morning the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) women’s basketball team pulled out of Romano Gym heading to their season finale, the Division II NCAA National Championship game. It was quite the sendoff for the school’s first title bound basketball team as their bus pulled out to cheers and the waving of golden rally towels from a crowd filling the sidewalks.
The Bulldogs then arrived in Dallas on their charter flight just before 1 p.m.
In his first year at UMD Athletic Director Forrest Karr said it’s been an honor to cheer for this team and be a part of their success.
“We’re just grateful for all the people that have come before because when success like this happens it’s generally the result of decades of student-athletes and coaches and administrators and decisions and funding and different things that have happened that have built up to this result,” Karr said.
UMD will get in a few practices then it’s championship day Saturday.
32-3 they tip-off against undefeated 36-0 Ashland University (Ohio) at 2:30 p.m. at Dallas’ American Airlines Center.
“There were some games where it seemed like it maybe almost wasn’t possible to come back, and they never believed that. They always believed they can come back, and we’ve all witnessed those moments. It takes a special group to have that attitude plus the skill, plus the work ethic, plus everything that it takes,” Karr added.
HOW TO WATCH: The game will be televised on CBS Sports Network. In Duluth watch parties will be held at Hoops Brewing and Tavern on the Hill, as well as on campus in UMD’s Kirby Student Center.
