UMD women’s hockey hands St. Thomas their first season loss

On Friday afternoon, no. 5 University of Minnesota Duluth women’s hockey hosted St. Thomas for their home opener. The Bulldogs fighting to snap a three-game losing skid after falling to Colgate and the University of Wisconsin.

Early in the first period, Caitlin Kraemer through the skates of her defender fired a shot off, Calla Frank stopped it, Kraemer regained possession and passed to Devyn Millwater who took the shot, but Frank denied this one too. Captain Clara Van Wieren now from the blueline threaded a shot through traffic but it bounced into Frank’s glove. Tommie’s now on the attack. They tried to chip one past Eve Gascon, but she stayed low to kept it scoreless. Eight minutes to go in the first, UMD on the power play, Van Wieren passed to Olivia Wallin who spun it to Kraemer, and she put it home for a 1-0 lead.

UMD capitalized on their lead to hand the Tommies their first season loss at 3-0.

UMD will look to take home a second win over St. Thomas on Saturday October 19th at 2PM, the matchup will take place at the AMSOIL Arena.
