Up North: Much needed ski, bike shop comes to Superior

Ski and bike shops are sprinkled throughout the Northland, but Superior was still lacking one – that is, until this past week.

“I was talking to the mayor about developing a different building, and he said, you know, what we really need is a bike shop in this town,” said Jeff Dorfman, president of Outdoor North. “So that’s really how it started. Let’s do a bike, ski, and clothing store. It’s something superior really needed”

This past Saturday marked the opening of Outdoor North, the first bike and ski shop in Superior. While the Northland is riddled with similar stores, Superior was lacking one of their own.

Outdoor North has skis, bikes, clothing, and are trying to get into the disc golf space as well. Regardless of the amount and quality of the equipment, the experience needed to own any of it is a broad spectrum.

“We got a little bit for everyone from beginner to advanced to expert,” said Erik Howard, a ski specialist at Outdoor North. “We’re really trying to foster an inclusive community that is open to people who are just getting started to those that have been skiing their whole life.”

The shop’s opening has not only meant a lot to the people who have helped it go ground ground up, but to those that have entered the doors already.

“I’ve been really fortunate to be able to be involved in everything, from just the labor of painting this building and helping out with some of the renovations and then ordering product and getting it all in here and getting the whole business going,” said Peter Brinkman.

“We’ve had so many people thank us for doing it, that we needed a bike shop. There hadn’t been one in town for at least 20 years, so we were happy to do it,” concluded Dorfman.
