Up North: UWS celebrates opening of SCCU Stadium

Gone are the days of the University of Wisconsin-Superior men’s and women’s soccer taking the pitch down the street at Superior High School. Now, the Yellowjackets have their own turf to protect.

“What an exciting day for Superior, not just UWS, not just the University of Wisconsin-Superior, but Superior, the entire community,” said Tim Foster, the President of Superior Choice Credit Union.

In mid-April, UWS broke ground on the Superior Choice Credit Union Stadium, with the intention of giving men’s and women’s soccer, along with track and field, a stadium to call home.

However, the process for building the stadium stems from much further back in time.

“In 2018 we commissioned a study to look at our athletic facilities and recreational facilities here on campus,” said Director of Athletics Nick Bursik. “We’re beyond excited to be at a point today where we’re opening a new facility.”

The stadium isn’t just a way to get the Yellowjacket athletic teams out on the SCCU stadium though.

The community outreach and availability for everyone is what Superior Choice Credit Union and the Yellowjackets are most proud of.

“It was very clear that we needed a new field and needed it to be turfed,” shared Renee Wachter, UWS’ Chancellor. “Something that would support academics as well as recreational opportunities for our students, enhance the student athlete experience, but also be a benefit for our community.”

“We really think that this facility is a facility of opportunity,” said Bursik. “Not only is it going to support our athletic teams, but also our academic programs and the recreational opportunities for all students. So we’re really excited as a campus to see the impact that it will have and the opportunities it will help generate. But we also know too that it also can benefit the community. We are really looking forward to partnering with some community-based organizations to help ensure that the stadium is really in use almost all year around when we can and really impacting those within our region.”

So after all the ribbon cutting and tours, the sun set on Friday, rose on Saturday, and SCCU stadium was ready to rock.

16 combined goals between the men’s and women’s team was quite the grand opening, with many goals to come in the future.
