Up North: Young athletes get energy out with one mile fun run

Sometimes getting out to run just one mile is all you need.

Either to start a running journey or just to get the legs moving, the Young Athletes Foundation hit Bayfront Park for the second year of their one mile fun run.

The second year of the run also saw a doubled crowd at the starting line.

“It feels absolutely amazing, said Camryn Joki from the Young Athletes Foundation. “Last year was our first year doing this. So we only had about 25 participants and we’re hoping to more than double, which we are around 50 since we’ve had a lot of kiddos just show up today, which is amazing.”

The event is an emphasis on the fact that Duluth itself is a running city, of course thanks in part to Grandmas Marathon.

“Grandmas is a huge thing in Duluth, so I feel like seeing a lot of adults participate with that, it’s just a super fun thing to start getting kids into,” said Joki. “The Young Athletes Foundation really provides so many great opportunities. So it was wonderful being able to partner with them for this.”

“Duluth is great,” said Gaven Greshowak, one of the athletes who ran. “They have a lot of running events and opportunity to run around. So I like that about it.”

“I feel like the community is overall just really active and likes to do stuff outside, which is really nice,” added his running partner, Will Johnson.

For runners like Gaven and Will, the one mile run was a piece of cake, and in fact was some extra training for them.

“We train a lot in the summer, said Greshowak. “You know, running a lot every week and stuff like this is really fun to do to test our skills and see where we’re at.”

“Yeah, I would definitely agree,” said Johnson. “It’s super fun to be able to like train with the team and then be able to do stuff like this and do really well.”
