UWS baseball scores 26 runs to complete doubleheader sweep over Northland

The University of Wisconsin-Superior (UWS) baseball team scored 26 runs in their doubleheader with Northland College on Friday to complete the three-game series sweep over the Lumberjacks. Friday’s games officially marked the Yellowjackets’ home opener for the 2025 season at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.

UWS took game one 13-1 and game two 13-3, both matches spanning seven innings. UWS had also won game one of their series with Northland on Thursday 5-0 in Duluth.

In game one on Friday, Northland’s Nathan Davison scored the first run in the first inning. However, in the third UWS scored their first of 13 runs off a Payton Steiner two-run homer. Then Maxton Howell followed that up with a three-run homer to lead 5-1. In the sixth inning, Brian O’Dwyer closed out the scoring with a two-run bomb to win 13-1. Tanner Voight led the game with three runs, three hits, and three RBI.

UWS pitcher Zach Romans allowed just two hits and one run while throwing eight strikeouts over all seven innings. Northland’s Ethan Boyce pitched six strikeouts over 4.2 innings.

In game two, UWS’ Steiner opened the scoring with a solo home run in the first inning. Dezmond Letexier scored in the fourth to bring Northland within one, then in the sixth, now down 4-1, Vinny Cooney and Anthony Boyle scored to once again make it a one run game. However, from there UWS went on to score nine unanswered runs. For the Yellowjackets, Trey Sybrant had four runs, two hits and one RBI, while Steiner had two hits, two runs and one RBI. Northlands’ Boyle had one run, two hits and one RBI.

On the mound, Lumberjack pitcher Peyton Solberg recorded five strikeouts over 5.0 innings, and UWS’ Josh Pritchard had three strikeouts over 4.0 innings.

UWS (8-9) next visits Saint Mary’s University for a doubleheader Tuesday, March 25 in Winona. First pitches are set for 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. at Max Molock Field.

Northland (0-13) next battles Hamline University in River Falls, Wis. Wednesday, March 26 at 10:30 a.m.
