UWS Baseball sweeps three-game series against Martin Luther
On Thursday, the University of Wisconsin Superior baseball team took down Martin Luther 9-4 and 14-5 in their doubleheader matchup, ending their three-game series with a sweep.
In game one:
The Yellowjackets would trail 2-0 going into the bottom of the fifth inning, before Jonny Rhodes shot a single to center field, giving way for Cole Ondrus to score. Payton Stein at bat rips a double out between right and center field, with Rhodes coming home to tie things at twos. Trey Sybrant finds his target out in center field, and Stein heads home to take the 3-2 lead. Sybrant would then score after tagging up on a pop fly.
In the seventh inning, Stein would return to the plate, this time hitting a home run and bringing in Rhodes and Wylee Lotman. Devin Fryden would rip a single through left field, giving way for both Maxton Howel and Tanner Voigh to come home.
Martin Luther would score twice in the eighth inning, but UWS would prove too much, winning 9-4.
In game 2:
Martin Luther would put themselves on top early once more, tallying two in the first inning. In the second inning, Tanner Voigh would put the Yellowjackets on the board, stealing home on a caught pop-fly. In the fourth inning, Maxton Howell would hit a shot to right field; despite being caught out, Tanner Voigh would come home to tie things at twos.
Martin Luther would tally three more in the fifth inning, bringing the score to 5-2. Yellowjacket’s Devin Fryden would rip a single to center field, bringing Noah Dagosti home. In the sixth inning, Cole Ondrus would send a shot into right field, bringing in Trey Sybrant. Dagosti would follow with a single of his own, giving way for Jonny Rodes, Ondrus, and Howel to come home – and giving UWS the lead 7-5. In the seventh inning, Voigh would rip a single up through the center to bring Payton Stein into home plate. Sybrant finds a spot in right center, giving Fryden enough time to make it home.
In the eighth inning, Voigh his back with a single with Fryden coming home. Ondrus makes it to second on a shot to left center, tallying both Sybrant and Voigh. Howel would come home on a fly ball, bringing the Yellowjackets to a final score of 14-5.
