Justin Liles: A little stretch of quiet weather.

It sure is good to see the sunshine and a quieter day around the region. Many people are likely cleaning up across the Iron Range from yesterday’s storms. Large hail was reported everywhere. Some getting to the size of baseballs.

There were also some confirmed tornadoes in northern Minnesota One of these was confirmed near Cross Lake in Crow Wing County. Surveillance is currently being done in Aitken County to determine if multiple tornadoes touched down. The National Weather Service did confirm a weak tornado briefly touched down in Carlton County near Wright, Minnesota.

Scattered showers and some isolated storms are expected to develop this afternoon and persist into the early evening. Most of these looks to stay north of the Twin Ports. Some storms could be on the strong side with hazards being pea sized hail and gusts up to 40 mph.

Quiet weather for Friday as high pressure briefly builds in. Moist mid-levels may prevent the area from drying out too much in the afternoon but take that with some healthy skepticism. Current forecast has is dry but daytime heating and any moisture loitering around could spark off a few PM showers. Looking ahead to this weekend into early next week, widespread showers and thunderstorms are possible. Rain will move in late Saturday afternoon and evening. These showers will hang around through Saturday night and in Sunday morning. A strong surge of warm air into the region will result in high temps on Sunday bring in the low to mid 80s for most. This could lead to some strong evening thunderstorms again.
