February 6: A windy intermission

The overnight snow wraps up and the westward winds move in as we head into a breezy Thursday across the Northland with more snow expected to arrive this weekend.

The snow from overnight continues to move eastward throughout the morning. Winter Storm Warnings and Watches are in place across northern Minnesota as heavy snow still accumulates across the Arrowhead through 6 AM. A key risk with the brief stretches of heavy snow will be reduced visibility on roadways. Remember to give ample time for any travel this morning and give plenty space between vehicles and plows.

As the snow clears out our focus will switch to the elevated winds and gusts that will build in from the west for the rest of the day. 15 to 25 mph winds will build mid-day and bring temperature down from the low 20s to the single digits by sunset. The North and South Shores will see wind gusts up to 40 mph as the westward flow ramps up.

Our next chance for snow will arrive Friday night and continue into Saturday morning with over two inches expected south of US-2 as the heaviest of snow sticks to north-central Wisconsin. We are keeping a close eye on areas expected to receive 6 inches of snow or more stretching from Brainerd to Hinckley, Minnesota and then Hayward and Phillips, Wisconsin
