Lea Zmurko:  Sunshine today, but widespread snow tomorrow

December 18: A clipper is coming

The early morning snow will clear, and sun will be widespread by the afternoon. The additional snow will come across the Northland tonight.

Many will see some snow across cars and sidewalks as they wake up this morning as a few isolated snow showers crossed the Twin Ports in the early morning. Lake effect snow will also be landing across Iron County as the northwest wind continues to bring the snow onto the South Shore.

By mid-morning the skies will start to clear, and sunshine will be sticking around for the afternoon. Temperatures will remain in the upper teens and low twenties, which is right near normal for this time of the year.

Conditions will change as the sun sets and a clipper of heavy snow makes its way across from Brainerd Lakes through Hinckley and into northwest Wisconsin. This wide path of a snowstorm will continue northward as many areas are anticipating 3 to 6 inches of snow. Lake effect snow will bring locally higher amounts along the North and South Shores through Friday morning.  With a significant increase in snowfall amounts, a Winter Storm Watch has been issued for the North Shore as well as Douglas and Bayfield counties as some localized areas see a likelihood of receiving 8 inches of snow by Thursday night.

Cold air will follow the clipper, and temperatures will fall below normal for the start of the weekend.
