Point to La Pointe 2.1 Mile Open Water Swim
Spectators are welcome to attend the Point to La Pointe 2.1 Mile Open Water Swim on Saturday, August 6. The event runs from 7:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. and begins at the Washignton Ave. Beach in Bayfield, and finishes at 1045 Sunny Slope Road on Madeline Island.
Swimming to Madeline Island has around the Bayfield area for decades. Organizers say what started out as a community swim for 24 people in 2006, has grown into a thriving race that sells out annually. This year, the Point to La Pointe swim will be returning to finish on Madeline Island in 2022, after COVID-19 forced us to change our route last year. This is the biggest fundraising effort of the Recreation and Fitness Resources (RFR) a non-profit organization that operates the Bayfield Rec Center and North Coast Community Sailing School.
This year, the sold out event has attracted 650 swimmers from around the world to swim in one of three divisions. The largest division is the women’s competitive, followed by men’s competitive, and a small community/recreational swimmers division. There will be a team of safety kayakers, and safety power boats, escorted by the US Coast Guard, keep swimmers on track to the finish line.
