Up North: AMSOIL Snocross races to season finale at Spirit Mountain
With over three decades of history, Duluth is where legends are made in Snocross, and a Snocross event made it’s way back to the Northland this past weekend.
Thanks to an early spring snow storm, AMSOIL Snocross was able to return to Duluth this weekend, where the event historically began. The iconic track is riddled with tight turns, and provides the perfect setting for an epic showdown between drivers.
“This is a very iconic and a very historic site,” said Jeff Fischer, the announcer at AMSOIL Snocross. “This has been going on for quite a few years. So if anybody hasn’t ever been out here, you need to get out here and check it out. We have kids as young as six, all the way up to guys in their 40s, 50s that are out here racing.”
Speaking of the 40s and 50s, some nice days prior to the event had some drivers worried, but the fresh blanket of snow was more than welcomed.
“The course, when we got up here this week to set the course up, there was more than enough snow,” said Fischer. “I mean, you know, thank God for ski hills because they have a lot of snow and that’s what works good. Our springtime races, it’s so cool to be able to have it at a ski hill because there’s a lot of snow being made all season long. We can just push it up into one pile and make a track. This track is one of our bigger tracks. It’s turning out to be a very technical track because of the bumps and the holes that are forming out there between races.”
The three day event saw the worlds best Snocross drivers take the iconic course. AMSOIL Snocross travels all around the country, from New York to South Dakota, and into our backyard. The season itself is not easy, but the pure love of the sport is what keeps drivers going full speed ahead.
“Snowmobilers definitely have a passion for their sport,” said Fischer. “I mean, look at some of the winters we’ve gone through and we still love the sport of snowmobiling. That’s what you can go through, the pits here. What’s really cool is you can buy a pit pass and go look at all the big haulers. There’s some semis out there that are in race trailers that are so cool. You just see the passion that these people have and these racers, both male and female out here.”
