Prep Sports Extra: September 1st
Friday night lights are turned on across the Northland and starting on Friday, WDIO Sports will have the best highlights and all the scores from our local high school games during Prep Sports Extra at 10:30 p.m.
Two big rivalry games were played in the first installment of Prep Sports Extra, the Hammer Game and the Little Brown Jug.
One of the most anticipated matches was between the Proctor Rails and Hermantown Hawks. It’s the 72nd time that these two teams have met, in what was dubbed the Hammer Game back in the 1990’s.
Friday night’s game took place at Egerdahl Field in Proctor where Hermantown took home the win for the third consecutive year winning 47-8.
Another big match was between the Barnum Bombers and Moose Lake/Willow River Rebels who played for the Little Brown Jug trophy, a title that the two teams haven’t battled for since 2019. The first game between the Moose Lake/Willow River co-op and Barnum took place in 1984, but the Jug dates back to the era of the Moose Lake Lakers.
Barnum took home the win by the final of 28-22 in overtime.
Cloquet also took a visit up the shore to Two Harbors where the Agates came away with a 40-8 win.
Duluth Denfeld looked to build off of their three win season a year ago and they did just that winning 28-16 over Mora.
Northwestern improved to 3-0 on the early season as they beat Spooner by the score of 52-6.
Also in Wisconsin, Superior fell to Menomonie by the final of 42-7.
A few Northland teams flipped on the Thursday night lights. Esko’s offense was on full display as they toppled Duluth East by the final of 63-6, and Rock Ridge also had a solid performance shutting out Hibbing 38-0.
Thursday Night Highlights: Esko topples Duluth East, Rock Ridge wins first game on new turf.
