We look east of the Twin Ports across the Arrowhead and northwest Wisconsin for travel impacts today with a Winter Storm Warning in effect until 7 pm. All South Shore counties and the North Shore of Cook Co. are in a Blizzard Warning until 7 pm as heavy snowfall rates and strong winds bring prolonged whiteout conditions. The heaviest snowfall rates will have been overnight and through this morning. Snow will lighten up as it gradually exits to the east through the afternoon and evening. By tonight, all that would linger is light lake effect for the South Shore. Areas still seeing snow stay in the 30s, while west of the Twin Ports features 40s and decreasing clouds.
Additional accumulation after 6 am will stay under an inch for the Twin Ports to Two Harbors, then quickly rise looking northeast with 6-12” for much of Cook Co. Northeast Douglas, northern Bayfield, Ashland and Iron Co. will also be in the 6-12” range with greater than 12” possible locally at the Bayfield Peninsula and in the snowbelt of Ashland and Iron Co. Amounts drop off going south and east from the shoreline with Hayward on the edge of 1-3” potential.
Tuesday will help melt some of this latest storm with highs in mid-40s to low 50s under mostly sunny skies. The relief is brief. An active stretch of weather returns Wednesday with a wintry mix and a strong east wind. Freezing rain and ice accumulation is possible. The wintry mix will turn to snow Thursday and linger into Friday morning.
