Spring makes a return for one day before another messy system brings strong winds, cool temps, and a combination of rain and snow to the region. Flooding remains a concern with some snowmelt today and more moisture on the way Wednesday into Friday, particularly in east central Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin where excessive rainfall is possible.
Our Tuesday features highs in mid-40s to low 50s with abundant sunshine. Cloud cover thickens tonight with wintry mix chances arriving from the southwest Wednesday morning. A slick morning commute is possible. Wednesday will have a mix of rain, freezing rain, and snow, but snow accumulation is expected to remain minimal. Showers and thunderstorms return from the south Wednesday night into Thursday morning with heavy rain possible south of the Twin Ports. Freezing rain and ice accumulation will also be possible. Thursday begins with rain in parts of Wisconsin, snow in far northern Minnesota, and a mix in-between. The mix turns to snow from the west through the day.
Impactful snow accumulation is possible. There remains uncertainty in accumulation potential based on precipitation type, but as of this morning, the Borderland has the best chance for more than 6” of snow. At least 3” is possible across the Iron Range and Grand Rapids, and the Twin Ports is in the 1-3” range for the time being. Amounts drop off to under an inch for much of northwest Wisconsin as rain will be more heavily in the mix here. Accumulation potential may change as confidence in the system’s track increases.
