Brandon Weatherz: Warming up for the weekend

Our Friday begins chilly with temps ranging from teens by Lake Superior to near zero in far northern Minnesota. This temperature relationship reverses this afternoon as an east wind keeps temps along the shorelines in low to mid-30s. Meanwhile, we’ll rise to upper 30s to mid-40s for areas away from the lake.
The Northland will stay mostly dry today and tonight with precip chances staying closer to a front extending from South Dakota into southern Wisconsin. An early morning round of snow in North Dakota ahead of this feature will dry out as it moves east toward the drier air of high pressure today, but a deck of clouds may survive in our neck of the woods this afternoon. Hayward is on the northern edge of potential for light rain and snow overnight with the better chance staying south.
Saturday will be another “cooler by the lake” day with a breezy east wind. Temps in Canal Park will still be cool around 35 with the airport on the hill reaching near 39. Meanwhile, upper 40s to low 50s will abound for inland communities. As of now, the rest of the forecast will feature a southwest wind with the cooler conditions being limited along the North Shore in Cook County.
This will allow the Twin Ports to also soak up the warmth as a stretch of above average temperatures begins Sunday and lasts through the middle of next week. Considering the snow pack that is still out there, this warm stretch will allow for plenty of snowmelt, enhanced runoff, and localized flooding as creeks and rivers rise. Fortunately, the forecast is still rather dry with only a chance for sprinkles Sunday afternoon and evening.
