The first day of December begins with frigid temperatures in single digits above and below freezing. Temperatures improve through the day with highs in mid and upper 30s under a mix of clouds and sun. A south wind will continue to send milder air our way overnight, allowing for a more comfortable start to the day Friday. Morning lows will be in the 20s, then highs range from upper 20s near International Falls to upper 30s in northwest Wisconsin.
An area of low pressure will cross the Northland through the day Friday, bringing snow from the northwest in the afternoon and evening. Initial precip may include wintry mix with a light glaze of ice possible. Expected totals have dropped a bit since yesterday, but travel may still be impacted. The highest amounts will be near the international border where 3-4” are possible. We fall to 1-2” moving south toward the Iron Range, and generally near to less than an inch for much of the rest of the Northland. A localized 3-6” is possible in the South Shore snowbelt where snow chances linger through Saturday morning.
Winds peak Friday night into Saturday morning and cold air takes over the region. Saturday begins with temps in single digits above and below zero, and highs stay in single digits to teens. Temperatures recover slightly Sunday and Monday, then we plunge back into frigid conditions by Tuesday. An active weather pattern may bring a few rounds of light snow next week.
