Brandon Weatherz: First light snow accumulation possible Friday morning

The cold has arrived, and it’s sticking around through the start of next week. An unsettled weather pattern will keep occasional rain and snow showers in the Northland each day through Sunday. Today features a mix of rain and snow across the region. Surface temps above freezing won’t allow snow to stick this time. Highs range from upper 30s to mid-40s under gray skies with a breezy northwest wind.
Tonight is when temperatures fall into upper 20s to low 30s. Scattered snow showers envelop the region from the west and push into northwest Wisconsin by the early morning. Light accumulation is expected to mostly collect on grassy surfaces, but slick roads will be possible for the Friday morning commute. Accumulation of several tenths of an inch is expected for the bulk of the Northland. If a full inch is received, it would be toward parts of Itasca and Koochiching Counties. Friday’s precipitation becomes more isolated in the afternoon with rain mixing in. It’s another cold day with highs in upper 30s to low 40s.
The weekend will continue to feature below average temperatures and mostly cloudy skies. A few light rain and snow showers return from the northwest Saturday evening, then a slight chance lingers on Sunday. Another blast of cold air driven by a north wind will bring the potential for lake effect snow to Lake Superior’s South Shore on Monday.
