Brandon Weatherz: Warm today before a sloppy system arrives
Our Thursday is warm, sunny, and breezy with temperatures topping off around 20 degrees above average. A sloppy system will bring a mix of rain and snow to the region arriving overnight, continuing Friday and Friday night, and lingering Saturday morning. There is still uncertainty in precipitation type and potential for accumulation, but current thinking is that rain will be dominant with the initial precip late Thursday night and into Friday morning. Overnight lows will be near to above freezing, limiting slick travel concerns for the Friday morning commute.
Friday will then see snow try to enter the mix from the north beginning in the morning and gradually mixing in southward through the day and overnight. Snow is expected to become dominant for most Friday night into Saturday morning. Rain may mix back in Saturday before we finally dry out from the northwest.
Accumulation would be slushy. Currently, the Storm Track Weather Team anticipates around one inch in Duluth with a greater chance for 1” up to 3” reaching north of Duluth to include the Iron Range and Minnesota Arrowhead. Another area of 1-2” is possible near and east of Hayward in Northwest Wisconsin, while the rest of the Northland would stay under an inch.
