Areas of fog and freezing drizzle have brought patches of ice to Northland roads this morning. Fog gradually improves by the afternoon with cloudy skies lingering. Temps begin rather mild in upper teens to upper 20s, but highs will be in a similar range as temps hold rather steady today.
The Northland is on the northern edge of a weather system that will impact the region Tuesday into Wednesday. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for east central Minnesota, South St. Louis County, and across northwest Wisconsin. Timing has trended later, with the Advisory beginning for the Twin Ports at 10 am Tuesday and lasting until midnight.
Expect travel to deteriorate from the south through the day Tuesday as snow moves into the region. Wintry mix and a glaze of ice is still possible, but the better chance for ice accumulation is south of the Northland. The potential for as much as 3” of snow will ride a line from the Brainerd Lakes Area to Duluth.
Accumulation quickly drops off north of this line with less than an inch expected for the Iron Range at this time. Areas south of this line will see a widespread 3-6” with higher amounts locally, particularly from the Hayward Area toward Ashland. The bulk of accumulation falls by Tuesday night, then snow pulls south on Wednesday. Quieter weather arrives for the end of the week and continues next weekend with seasonable temperatures.
