Brandon Weatherz: Bitter cold, more snow, and strong winds ahead

Roads are slick this morning after last night’s snow. We get a break from snow today, then we turn our attention to a potential winter storm that may impact parts of the Northland Wednesday through Saturday.
Our Tuesday is frigid with highs in single digits. A west wind will keep feels-like temps in the minus teens through the day. Skies will be partly cloudy for most, but lake effect clouds and light snow is possible for the South Shore snowbelt. Temperatures tonight fall to -10 to -20 with wind chills approaching -30. Keep pets in and limit your time outdoors.
The winter storm we’re tracking will emerge from the Rockies on Wednesday, cross the Midwest on Thursday, and rapidly intensify on Friday as it tracks toward the Ontario Quebec border. The greatest concern with this storm will be a prolonged period of strong winds, leading to blowing snow and possible blizzard conditions, and possibly causing more power outages due to the amount of heavy snow and ice that remains on many trees from last week’s storm. A Winter Storm Watch is in effect across the Northland from 12 pm Wednesday until 12 pm Saturday.
Snow will approach the Northland from the southwest Wednesday morning and afternoon, then periods of snow will come and go through Friday. The strong northwest winds will direct lake effect snow along the South Shore through Saturday. This part of the Northland will see the greatest snow totals when all is said and done.
