Brandon Weatherz: A mix of rain and snow on the way

After a warm and sunny start to the week, we keep the warmth today but lose the sunshine. Temps begin in 20s and 30s and top off in mid-30s to low 40s. Rain builds into the region from the south through the morning and lingers for a wet Tuesday. We look north and west for the transition from rain to snow to begin this evening, leading to a Winter Weather Advisory for Crow Wing, Cass, Itasca, Koochiching, and North St. Louis Co. from 6 pm today until noon tomorrow. 2-3” is possible from Brainerd to Grand Rapids with 3-6” possible north.
The rain to snow transition will gradually take place across the rest of the Northland from west to east through the night and into Wednesday morning. A blustery northwest wind arrives from the west Wednesday morning with blowing snow reducing visibility and potentially causing downed tree limbs and power lines. Temperatures also fall on the backside of the system Wednesday, causing wet areas to turn icy and then receive a light layer of snow accumulation.
Snow tapers off from west to east Wednesday afternoon and evening with lingering lake effect chances for the South Shore snowbelt Wednesday night. Apart from lake effect, terrain enhanced snow from a gravity wave could lead to a couple of inches in parts of Douglas and Bayfield County. Thursday and Friday will be quiet and cool with temps reminding us that it’s still February. We trend back on the warm side of average for the weekend.
