A passing cold front has triggered early morning snow showers, plummeting temperatures, and blustery northwest winds for our Thursday. High temps for the day were set early in the morning with subzero temps taking over the Northland from the northwest through the day. A Wind Chill Advisory is in effect across Northeast Minnesota beginning at 6 am and lasting until 6 pm with wind chills approaching -40. A Wind Advisory is in effect until midnight along the North Shore of Lake and Cook Co. where winds will be sustained at 20 to 30 mph and gusting near 45 mph. In addition to bitter wind chills, this could result in blowing snow, fallen tree limbs, and possibly power outages. Any power outages in the cold that lies ahead would be a dangerous situation.
The coldest conditions will be this evening into tomorrow morning. A Wind Chill Warning is in effect from 6 pm until noon Friday across northeast Minnesota where wind chills will approach -50 with frostbite possible in less than ten minutes. A Wind Chill Advisory is in effect for east central Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin for the same timeframe with wind chills down to -40 expected. Air temps will be in the -20s for the bulk of the region with -30s possible in the typical cold pockets of northern Minnesota. Highs stay near and just above zero on Friday, then we finally put the bitter cold behind us this weekend. A stretch of temperatures near and above average begins Saturday and takes us through the middle of next week.
