Our Monday is snowy with a Winter Weather Advisory in effect across the Northland until 9 pm with a general 3-5” expected. Around 6” is possible locally along the North Shore of Lake and Cook County, where a Winter Storm Warning is in effect until 9 pm. Snow tapers off from west to east this evening and overnight. Lake effect will linger for the South Shore snowbelt lingers into early Tuesday morning. Localized amounts here will also reach around 6”.
The South Shore lake effect is one result of blustery northwest winds that kick in on the backside of today’s system. The other is wind chills falling between -20 and -35 for much of northern Minnesota by Tuesday morning.
A stronger winter storm will impact the region Tuesday through Thursday. Southern counties from Crow Wing to Sawyer have a Winter Storm Watch beginning at 6 pm Tuesday and lasting until 6 pm Thursday. The Watch begins for the Twin ports and the rest of the Head of Lake Superior at 6 am Wednesday. This system will be impactful due to a combination of accumulating snow and strong winds, which will be the strongest near Lake Superior. The two together could result in blizzard conditions.
Wednesday’s snow would initially be a result of lake effect for shoreline communities, then widespread snow arrives from the south Wednesday evening and overnight. Snow lingers on Thursday. The greatest accumulation will be in northwest Wisconsin where some areas could see more than 12”. Accumulation will drop off steeply moving north with Duluth to Two Harbors on the northern edge of potential for significant accumulation.
