Brandon Weatherz: Accumulating snow arrives by the weekend
Our Thursday begins with what we saw Wednesday, including stubborn clouds and areas of flurries. We can thank the clouds for keeping temps milder than they would otherwise be with temps ranging from single digits in the Arrowhead to teens for much of the rest of the region. We are expected to see peeks of sun as we head through the day with temperatures remaining cooler. Highs stay in upper teens to mid-20s across the Northland.
Temperatures stay mostly in the teens tonight with skies remaining clear initially, then grayer conditions settle in from the west by Friday morning. Friday will then be cloudy with highs in mid-20s to low 30s. Scattered light snow showers arrive from the west Friday afternoon, and periods of snow will continue through Friday night and Saturday bringing travel impacts. A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect across northeast Minnesota starting at noon Friday and lasting until 6 am Sunday. Snow chances move eastward Saturday night into Sunday morning lingering last along the South Shore.
Expected snow amounts have increased slightly since yesterday. At least 1-3” is expected across the Northland. The target of 3-6” begins near Grand Rapids and reaches near Duluth, extending across the Iron Range to the tip of the Arrowhead. We could still see locally higher amounts along the higher terrain of the North Shore. With the Twin Ports on the edge of that line separating 1-3” and 3-6,” we expect 2-5” for the Twin Ports Area.
