A wind shift will allow for one warm day in the Twin Ports before a breezy lake wind returns this weekend. Highs will top off around 80 degrees across the Northland, even including the city of Superior. Skies are partly cloudy overall. A cold front will sweep the region from north to south this evening and overnight with showers and thunderstorms both ahead of and behind the front.
The international border will first see rain chances in the late afternoon. That chance moves south across Koochiching, Itasca, and St. Louis Co. through the evening. Some storms may be capable of hail and heavy downpours. The main band of rain will have moved south of the Northland with the front by Saturday morning, but a few showers may linger. Unfortunately, this is the only widespread rain event in the forecast, and it won’t bring widespread accumulation. Drought conditions will worsen next week as we enter another dry stretch.
As for temperatures, today’s warmth is not sticking around through the weekend. A breezy east wind arrives Saturday to keep shoreline communities much cooler in the 50s. Inland areas top off in mid-60s to low 70s. Sunday will be mostly sunny with a lingering east wind. Highs as a region will range from upper 50s east toward Butternut to mid-70s west toward International Falls. Temps trend back on the warm side of average next week with inland areas regularly swinging near 80.
